McDermid Controls are pleased to have completed the installation of fume exhaust and smoke exhaust ventilation system and controls at the Amazon Fulfilment Centre in Bathgate.
Amazon upgraded their warehouse to incorporate new ‘fast track loading highways’ at each end of the site. This means that delivery vehicles are able to drive into the warehouse into one of 4 loading zones and be directly loaded within the warehouse. This is one of two initial trials of this system in the UK which will lead to greater logistic efficiencies.
Due to the volume of vehicles that will enter the Amazon warehouse, it was essential for health and safety to have a system in place to help regulate the build up of fumes and Carbon Monoxide.
To counter the problem of rising CO levels from the van exhaust fumes, a 2-stage ventilation system was installed to be controlled via a McDermid Controls’ Control Panel and BMS System.
A total of 4 Control Panels were installed with one located in each of the 4 loading zones alongside 8 smoke extract fans (2 in each zone) and 16 induction fans (4 in each zone).
If the CO levels rise to 30ppm, a low speed extractor is commenced and if the CO level rises to 40ppm then a high speed extraction is activated.
To alert staff to when the ventilation system is running, there is a flashing amber beacon situated on top of the Control Panel.
In the event of a fire alarm, the Controls double as a smoke extract system.
